5 ways to ensure successful onboarding for new recruits

As engineering and manufacturing firms will know, getting the right talent through the door is challenging and having the candidate sign on the dotted line, is just the start of the journey. If you don’t make an effort to make them feel comfortable from day one; you may soon find that they are looking at other opportunities, which means all your efforts have gone to waste. It is important to have a good onboarding process in place for new recruits into your business and these are some ways to ensure success.
 
 

Informal chat

 
As your new recruit arrives for their first day, you should take time to make them feel comfortable and relaxed. They don’t know anyone and will probably feel very nervous and apprehensive. As a manager, it is a good idea to take them for a coffee and informal chat, before you get them set up to start working. The first day should just be an opportunity for them to get to know how the business works and who they will be working alongside. Take a bit of time to get to know them and what their interests are – outside of work. This will make them feel more relaxed and welcome in their new employment.
 

Introductions

 

It is important to ensure that the new recruit knows their team and anyone they will be working with. It is often the case that new starts forget names as soon as they are introduced – but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take time to make the introductions. It is also good practice to send out an email to let everyone know their name and what they will be doing in the company. If you do this, people are more likely to speak to them, rather than wondering who they are.
 

Tour of building

 
Make sure you take your new recruit a walk around the building and point out any important places – such as the restrooms, canteen area and fire exits. It is also advisable to show them the location of any departments they will be working with regularly. They probably won’t remember it all on the first day, but this gives them an initial introduction to the set-up of the office.

 

Company culture

 
It is a good idea to also let the new recruit know about the culture of the organisation, so they understand what the expectations are. Simple things like letting them know that everyone is ready to start work for 9am, will save any embarrassment when they arrive for work and start pouring out their cereal, only to realise that everyone else has already kicked off their day. Every working environment is different – so it is important to give them an understanding of how things operate.
 
 

Workstation

 
Show your new start where they will be sitting and who will be part of their team, don’t just expect them to find out or they may be wandering around the office like a headless chicken. It is also important to have everything set up for them to get started. It is highly off-putting if log in’s and passwords are not prepared in advance and the new start has to spend the entire week reading through company brochures.
